When you think about earthquakes, you might think of California highways crumbling or The Rock sprinting through downtown chaos. What you don’t picture is your own home or business in Kentucky or Indiana shifting off the foundation.
That’s the first problem.
“Earthquakes don’t happen here.”
Actually, they do!
Our region sits near the New Madrid Seismic Zone—an active fault line that stretches across the Midwest. In fact, an earthquake has made the Mississippi River flow backwards as a result of an earthquake. This nearby fault line has caused some of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S. history back in the early 1800s, and geologists say it’s not a matter of if it’ll rumble again… it’s when.
Did you know moderate quakes (which happen more than you think) can cause serious damage to homes not built for that kind of shaking—aka, most homes in KY and IN.
“Doesn’t my homeowners insurance cover that?”
The answer is likely “no”, unless you have added this as an endorsement to your policy or as a standalone policy. Standard homeowners policies do not cover earthquake damage. We wish they did, but if your foundation cracks, walls separate, or your chimney crumbles due to seismic activity, you’re paying for that out of pocket unless you have earthquake coverage.
Personal property (furniture, electronics, appliances)
Additional living expenses (if you have to live elsewhere during repairs)
It’s designed to protect your real-life finances from being rocked right alongside your home.
“But is it worth it?”
Earthquake coverage is usually affordable in Kentucky and Indiana—especially when you compare it to the cost of rebuilding a home or replacing everything you own. Depending on your carrier, you could pay this with your homeowners payment or you could pay this separately.
Ask yourself, "can I afford to replace my home after an earthquake without the help of insurance?" If the answer is no, we want to help.
